Alton Local Food Initiative (ALFI) is committed to encouraging local people to buy, eat and, if possible, grow local food. This year (2012) our theme is ‘Fruit Growing’ and our activities and new planting will be centred around this theme. Fruit bushes are on order, so watch the developments of our sites around town.
We have sites growing vegetables, herbs and fruit at Westbrooke Road, the station plots (by the side gate on Platform 1), two planters in the centre of town and the Hop Gardens, opposite The Railway Arms. Volunteers help with the gardening.
Our supporters receive a quarterly newsletter and we have a website www.altonlocalfood.org.uk/ that is updated regularly and has a diary of our activities. It also publicises forthcoming events and explains the various strands of ALFI, as well as listing our aims.
If you wish to be a supporter or volunteer gardener please let us know via the website and you will be invited to participate in the variety of events that we are involved in during the year, which kick off with the annual seed swap and in May we have a seedling swap. We also have regular gardening working parties.
