Adopt some lucky black cat charm this New Year!

‘Adopt a black cat and good fortune could come your way this year,’ is the message from Cats Protection’s Farnham and Wey Valley Branch

The branch currently has three black cats looking for new homes and wants to encourage people to adopt their very own lucky charm.
They include the delightful Willum is an affectionate lap cat, just a youngster, and really quite a character. When he first came into Cats Protection foster care, he was quite nervous, and can still retreat to a safe hiding place if something unexpected happens.

He will hide at the sight of brooms or brushes, and is not keen on visitors coming to the house (at least until they’ve proven themselves to be friends). Perhaps he was a guard cat in a former life!
Willum is a wonderful character, and is a genuinely sweet-natured and friendly boy. He would adore to be a lap cat settled on the sofa with someone in a quiet household (perhaps that doesn’t get too many visitors!). He is also perfectly fine with children and likes playing with them if they are sensible.

Branch volunteer Louisa said: “New Year provides the perfect opportunity to find your ideal feline companion and because black cats are usually considered lucky, giving one a second chance could be fortunate for you both!”

According to popular legend, black cats can symbolise good luck and fortune. In years gone by, sailors’ wives kept black cats as they believed their presence would protect their husbands from the dangers of the seas. It is also well known that if a black cat enters your home uninvited and settles on your hearth, then any business in the family will prosper.

King Charles I of England is probably the most famous person in history to have owned a black cat. He believed his black feline brought him good luck so he made sure it was guarded every day. In a strange twist of fate, the day after the cat died the King was arrested by Cromwell’s troops.
